International Timezone Meeting @ Microsoft, Redmond
Note to people interested in solving the nasty problems of timezone support in calendaring: CalConnect (The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium) will host a one-day Timezone Workshop on Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. This workshop is intended for and open by invitation to parties with an interest in Timezones, how they are [...]
Corrupt Toshiba recovery disc
Yesterday I bought my girlfriend a used Toshiba A200 laptop. It was only a couple of months old, looked nice and shiny, and had no scratches. But when I was going to re-install the machine using the recovery discs from Toshiba, I couldn’t get past formatting the hdd. The error that occured, in a console [...]
New commenting system in place
I’ve recently changed comment system to something called http://www.intensedebate.com/. You can think of it as outsourcing the commenting system. The reason for this is that I find the WordPress commenting system lacking, aswell as I felt like evaluating Intense Debate to see if it’s something we could use at work.
Receiving mail again
A few weeks ago I told my old host to point to the linode.com nameservers, as thats’t the host I’m using now. (vps, yey!) Unfortunately I forgot about email, so that’s two weeks of possible email down the /dev/null
Moving to new host (vps, yey!)
Over the next couple of days, I’ll be moving my blog into my new vps. The last couple of years, my domain pool has been building up, along with a small side business, which means it would be easier to host everything in one place by myself. This also gives me great flexibility in what [...]
Cmd + Tab and Dock not working in OS X
Today suddenly my Cmd + Tab just died on me, along with the Dock. Seeing as I use ⌘⇥ all the time, I set out for a solution. Being quite early in the morning, I didn’t really think for myself but figured Google could do the job.
Macbook black screen caused by faulty RAM
My macbook decided to die today, all it would show was a black screen. I could hear the drive and hdd spinning, but the screen was as dark as Hitler’s conscience. Turned out one of my two 2Gb RAM sticks had died. So basically you should check your memory before you take the machine in [...]
Hardware version of Radiohead’s “Nude”
Usually I like to blog about software stuff, but this time I’ll gladly make an exception. A guy named James Houston has recreated Radiohead’s “Nude” using hardware like scanner, TV and harddrives to create the tones! It’s more or less impossible to explain, to just watch this: Big Ideas (don’t get any) from James Houston [...]
Apple keyboard, windows XP and even synergy
While I prefer using one of my macs for everything, it so happens that the place I work really relies on Microsoft to serve them everything. Not my call, but I just have to make the best of it. For this reason I have my own macbook and a windows machine at work. However, since [...]
SSH keys and SSH agent in OS X
If you’re like me and connecting to many servers over SSH, you soon realise it’s very tedious to remember and enter the passwords every time. One way to avoid this it to just remove the passwords, but that’s very unlikely something you would want to do. Another safe solution is to use SSH keys. This [...]
